A BBL is widely considered a permanent cosmetic procedure, but there are ways to adjust your results. This blog discusses the various options patients have for altering their buttocks.

Is It Possible to Change a BBL Result?

Long a trending cosmetic surgery procedure, BBLs utilize autologous fat transfer to achieve a curvy backside, which is considered permanent. But what if you want to change your result? Are you stuck with what your first BBL gives you? Not a chance! Keep reading to find out what options you have for changing or reducing your behind.

What Is a BBL?

A BBL, or Brazilian Butt Lift, is a cosmetic procedure meant to increase the size of the buttocks and create a rounder, more voluptuous shape. This procedure is something of a “two-for-one,” as it involves removing unwanted fat via liposuction from a specific donor area and then treating and re-injecting the same fat back into the buttocks for a sculpted contour.

So, the benefits of a BBL involve more than just increasing the size of the buttocks, as another area of the body (such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs) receives a slimming treatment at the same time.

What Happens During the BBL Procedure?

During a BBL, your surgeon will make incisions around your donor area, which is usually a part of your body that has some excess fat that you would like to remove. Most patients choose their midsections, thighs, or hips. In the case of a BBL, patients most often choose the abdomen for fat removal to create a more hourglass figure.

Through these small incisions, your surgeon will gently remove fat via a thin tube called a cannula. Using back-and-forth motions, your surgeon removes fat in an even distribution for a smooth result.

Once the fat has been adequately removed, it will be treated and cleansed of impurities. Then, it will be injected into the buttocks and massaged into a plump, pleasing contour.

Why Would Someone Want to Reverse Their BBL?

This really comes down to personal preference, just like the decision to get a BBL in the first place. Many people love their BBLs, but some decide it’s no longer for them. Some reasons that you may wish to reverse your BBL include:

  • A large butt is no longer the aesthetic you want
  • You are uncomfortable by the changes to your body
  • You changed your mind
  • You feel that your buttocks are out of proportion
  • Unexpected weight gain increased the size of the buttocks after a BBL

What Are My BBL Reversal Options?

Both a BBL and its pre-requisite surgery, liposuction, involve the permanent displacement of fat throughout the body. When fat cells are removed via liposuction, they are permanently removed–they don’t grow back. Conversely, when fat is injected back into the buttocks during a BBL, the fat cells that are not naturally absorbed by the body are considered permanent.

One caveat: Although those cells do not disappear or grow back, they can fluctuate in size. This means that if you have a BBL and new fat cells are placed in your buttocks, subsequent weight gain can cause those cells to grow in size, so consistent weight is a must to maintain your results.

But how do you reverse a BBL?

The first step is to schedule a consultation with a BBL specialist like Dr. Joseph Bivens at Optimal Plastic Surgery. Dr. Bivens has been performing this procedure–and BBL reversals and revisions–for over 25 years, long before it was a mainstream procedure.

As such, Dr. Bivens has extensive experience in perfecting this procedure as well as in reversing or altering BBLs for patients of other surgeons, seeking to perfect results exactly as the patients want.

BBL Reduction in Orange County

At Optimal Plastic Surgery, we have a few options for reversing or reducing a BBL, as well as minimizing natural buttock fat. A BBL reduction is a cosmetic procedure offered by Dr. Bivens to reduce the size, shape, and projection of the buttocks.

This procedure can be performed as a secondary procedure after an initial BBL, in which a surgeon has increased the size of the buttocks using autologous fat grafting. But it can also be applicable to patients who have not had cosmetic surgery and have naturally large buttocks.

Some benefits of a BBL reduction include:

  • Better proportions of the buttocks to the rest of the body
  • A more uniform shape for uneven buttocks
  • Increased physical comfort
  • An improved personal aesthetic

The primary goal of a BBL reduction is to make the patient more comfortable with their bodies–whether they have had an initial BBL or not.

During the BBL reduction procedure, Dr. Bivens will use liposuction to remove unwanted fat, contour the buttocks, and create a smooth, natural-looking result.

Can I Have Another BBL to Improve My Initial Results?

While it’s certainly possible to have a second BBL to increase the size of your buttocks even more–within reason–not all patients want to simply increase the volume of fat on the butt. This is why Dr. Bivens offers another BBL procedure: the BBL Revision.

This procedure is specifically designed to improve the results of an initial BBL, but “improvement” will be different for each patient.

BBL Revision in Orange County

The primary aim of a BBL revision procedure is to reshape the buttocks after an initial BBL. This does not necessarily mean that the patient dislikes their initial BBL results, nor that the original surgeon did a poor job. On the contrary, any time autologous fat transfer is used, there is a chance that the body will absorb a percentage of the transferred fat.

Additionally, a difficult recovery process can result in less-than-ideal contours. Sitting on healing buttocks for too long, not eating enough healthy fats, or exercising too soon can all result in poor BBL results.

A BBL revision can:

  • Create a more pleasing contour to the buttocks
  • Smooth out indentations or irregularities
  • Reshape the projection of the buttocks
  • Create a more balanced silhouette
