How Is
Liposuction Performed?
Your Consultation
At Optimal Plastic Surgery, the consultation is a key part of your plastic surgery process. During your consultation with Dr. Bivens, he will listen to your goals and concerns regarding your liposuction procedure before discussing your options with you. He will also go over your medical history, examine the treatment area, and create a surgical plan that best addresses your needs.
It’s a good idea to prepare for your consultation with questions for Dr. Bivens, your full medical history, and a list of all medications and supplements you are currently taking. Dr. Bivens may advise you to stop taking certain medications prior to your procedure and will be able to give you a realistic estimate of the surgical results.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the size of the treatment area and Dr. Biven’s recommendations. On the day of surgery, Dr. Bivens will begin by marking where your incisions will go around the treatment area. Then, your anesthesia will be administered. He will then make small incisions on the pre-marked locations before inserting a small, thin tube called a cannula, which is used to break up fat deposits and vacuum the unwanted fat.
Dr. Bivens utilizes varying liposuction techniques based on your specific needs and goals, your health history, and the specific treatment location. Some possible liposuction types include tumescent, ultrasound-assisted, laser-assisted, and power-assisted. The fat is gently removed using a back-and-forth movement to maintain a smooth and natural-looking contour.
Once an adequate amount of fat has been removed and Dr. Bivens is satisfied with the result, he will carefully close the incisions.

What Is Liposuction
Recovery Like?
Immediately following your liposuction procedure, you will experience some swelling and bruising. You may have surgical drains placed at the incision sites, which prevent fluid from building up. You may also have a compression garment, which reduces swelling and helps to maintain the shape of your body’s contour. Dr. Bivens will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions, how long to wear your garment, or when to return to have your drains removed.
You should be able to return to work after a few days as long as strenuous activities are limited. Be sure to get plenty of rest as you recover.
When Will I
See My Liposuction Results?
Most patients can see an immediate difference following their liposuction procedure, although the full results will not be visible for some time. Once the swelling and bruising have dissipated and you are cleared to remove your compression garment, you should be able to notice your full results around six weeks postoperatively.
